A car or truck tune-up should be done annually, but many people like to schedule one in the spring after harsh winter driving. Having a regular Tune-Up is a good way to prevent problems from becoming costly repair jobs. Most mechanics, including the Certified Technicians at Bobby & Steve’s Auto World, recommend that a vehicle be serviced every 3,000 miles for optimum performance. However, every car manufacturer has its own maintenance schedule for different aspects of the vehicle, and drivers must take into account their own driving habits when scheduling maintenance.
How do you know when it is time for a Tune-Up? When your gas mileage decreases, when you have loss of power, when your engine is running rough or stalling at a stop, when your engine knocks when accelerating or runs after the ignition is turned off, and/or when your “Check Engine” or “Service Engine” light remains on after initial start.
A regular tune-up done at the suggested maintenance interval will make your engine easier to start and will improve fuel economy. A vehicle Tune-Up could include replacing or cleaning the air filter, spark plugs, distributor cap and/or the rotor. It also could include the replacement of spark plug wires, fuel filter, PCV valve and oxygen sensor.
